How to add photos and videos to your Messages in iOS 10

No matter if it's a new sparkling selfie or video of your child's latest baseball game, Messages lets you quickly share your favorite moments with friends and family. Messages has the tools you need, whether something catches your eye that you have to share right away, or you want to send a friend a favorite old photo.

With iOS 10, Apple has changed how photos and videos are sent in Messages on your iPhone or iPad. Here's your guide to what's new.

Apple's 2016 software updates — iOS 10, watchOS 3, tvOS 10, and macOS Sierra — are currently available as closed developer previews and as public betas for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That's why we strongly recommend staying away from the developer previews, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release this fall.

How to instantly send a photo using Messages in iOS 10 on iPhone or iPad

  1. Launch the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the conversation in which you'd like to send a photo.

  3. Tap on the camera button in the lower left corner.

    If the keyboard is up, tap the arrow next to the Compose box first.

  4. On the camera panel at the bottom of your screen, tap the capture button to take a photo. The photo will automatically appear in the Compose box.

  5. Tap the Send button (it looks like an arrow).

How to take and send a new photo or video using Messages in iOS 10 on iPhone or iPad

  1. Launch the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the conversation in which you'd like to send a photo.

  3. Tap on the camera button in the lower left corner.

    If the keyboard is up, tap the arrow next to the Compose box first.

  4. Swipe right on the camera panel at the bottom of the screen.

  5. Tap the Camera button.

  6. Tap the capture button to take a photo or swipe right to switch to video.

  7. After you've captured a photo or video, tap Markup if you want to mark up your photo (photos only), Edit if you want to add a filter or adjust the lighting, or Retake to take a new photo or video.

  8. When you are ready to send, tap Done in the top right corner of the screen.

  9. Tap the Send button (it looks like an arrow).

How to send an existing photo or video using iMessage in iOS 10 on iPhone or iPad

  1. Launch the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the conversation in which you'd like to send a photo.

  3. Tap on the camera button in the lower left corner.

    If the keyboard is up, tap the arrow next to the Compose box first.

  4. Swipe to the left to scroll through recent photos.

    You can also swipe to the right and tap the Photo Library button to access all of your photos and albums.

  5. Tap an image or video to send it. In recent photos, the picture will automatically appear in the Compose box.

    When selecting from your Photo Library, tap Choose. Your photo or video will then appear in the Compose box.

  6. Tap the Send button (it looks like an arrow).
